If you’re looking for a dining experience that’s a little different, this is your place! What do you get? Thai food in the comfort of someone else’s home with a weekly rotating menu at a flat fee AND you get to bring your own booze. Done and done!
I found out that Sunday is “vegan night” at Thai X-ing from my friend Mike. He isn’t vegan, but has been consistently delivering great veg dining recommendations. And I love that he is always game to try them with me!
They definitely have a unique reservation system, so be prepared for that. You call a number, leave a voicemail regarding the reservation you’d like and wait for someone to call you back and confirm. I’ve heard they do book up, so this isn’t the place to bank on for an important date/event/milestone. Calling just a few days in advance for only the 2 of us though, we didn’t have any issues.
We arrived at the Shaw row house, box of wine in tow, right on time for our reservation. It did take a few minutes to wave someone down to seat us, but that’s the last thing we had to do. There are no menus, just a set dinner of about 8 different plates that come out one right after the other.
Our first course was spring rolls and noodle salad with veggies.
A Thai coconut soup with tofu and mushrooms came out next. At this point, the heat from the first few dishes is kicking in and we are feeling it. Glad they leave pitchers of water on the table!
Next came the “famous” pumpkin curry. This was a great dish – I can see why it’s their most popular.
After the curry though, things get a little fuzzy for me. Everything was delicious, but it was a lot of tofu, veggies and sauces that I’m not 100% sure what to call. Without a menu or wait staff with a second to chat, I just dug in.
There was also a side of rice…
And mango and sticky rice for dessert. This stuff was amazing. The rice may be too sweet for some, but I was in heaven.
For $30 a person I think this is a great deal. It’s a huge home cooked meal and there’s something nice about taking the menus out of the equation. I’m definitely going back for seconds!
