I was super happy when I found yet another pizza place in the DC area that serves vegan, gluten free pizza, and even happier when I managed to rope some friends into trying it with me. Zpizza has several locations in the DC, Maryland and Virginia area, but since I was heading up to Silver Spring for the evening, this was the location I tried.
You can make your own pizza from the list of available toppings, but we opted for the Berkeley Vegan which comes with tomatoes, zucchini, mushrooms, peppers, onions and some veggie meatballs.
This is a small, 10″ pizza and it was the perfect size for two people to split. They use an unnamed brand of “soy cheese” on their pizzas, but it was actually really delicious. It was very creamy and not as salty as Daiya. Drew, my non-vegan pizza sharing friend, seemed to genuinely enjoy it.
We were on our way out so we decided to dine in, but I wouldn’t recommend it.
While the pizza is great, the dining room in the Silver Spring location isn’t. Other than some interesting impressionist artwork on the walls, like this avocado, it’s pretty grim. Unfortunately, it’s not that clean and the music selection and volume seems to be designed to drive patrons out. Maybe I’ll have to stop by one of their other locations in DC or Arlington.
