I know I was a little M.I.A. on the blog last week, but I’ve had a lot of fun (no cooking required) things going lately. Instead of trying new things in the kitchen, I ended up making a lot of smoothies, overnight oats and mash-ups, and was free to actually do a few new things out in D.C. instead.
I made my first trip to the Kennedy Center to see Les Miserables – and take in some amazing views from the massive second floor terrace.
The show was really good (and yes, sad) and I’ve been hooked on listening to the soundtrack (the original Broadway recording, natch) ever since.
I also made my first trip out to Strathmore so I could hear Michael Pollan speak. As I mentioned in my last post, he has written several books about the food industry and nutrition in our country. He points out somewhat frightening facts about the processed “food like substances” we find in our supermarkets and how their nutritional claims are not necessarily accurate.
His work is really interesting and thought provoking. I recommend his books to anyone wanting to learn more about making smarter food choices.
Lastly, this past Friday, I paid my first visit to the Newseum – although this wasn’t your run of the mill/6th grade field trip style museum trip.
Brightest Young Things hosted a massive, all-access Halloween party DJ’ed by Questlove.
We were able to run around on all 6 floors of the museum, report some fake news and even participate in an elaborate ticketing system to purchase drinks (that last one was a major fail, if you couldn’t tell).
I’m going to (hopefully) cook up some TVP this week in the form of tacos, but no guarantees. Upon request, I ended up making a second batch of candy corn on Saturday during our little snow “storm” and now I’m pretty much over being in my kitchen for a while, even after last weeks break!
Check out the sifter though – I was right, it made all the difference!
