The other day at lunch, my co-workers and I were talking about how deliciously addicting certain foods can be and we how crave, eat and yet still can’t get enough of our favorites – even when we’re full.
When the conversation transitioned to savory eats, I think sriracha was one of the first items mentioned. Almost everyone perked up a bit, and the stories began to flow. Someone’s ‘friend’ was in so deep she went as far as putting it on chocolate. Turns out, she wasn’t even the first. I mean, some people really, really love this stuff.
If you’ve never had it, it’s a spicy chili garlic sauce. It’s bright red and comes in the trademark bottle pictured above. Some people even affectionately call it the ‘rooster sauce.’ It’s very versatile, so before you go breaking out the chocolate, try some more reasonable dishes like noodles, brown rice or a veggie stir fry.
The simplest way to use it is as a sauce, straight up or mixed with common condiments. You really can put it on (almost) anything right out of the bottle, but I thought I’d share three of my favorites combinations.
Sriracha & Veganaise
I first tried sriracha and veganaise at Sticky Rice on H Street. I was hooked immediately. Creamy and spicy, it goes on everything from wraps and mash-ups to french fries and veggies. I make it at home now. Frequently.
Sriracha & Ketchup
Perfect as a spicy dip for fries, it changes up the standard old ketchup routine. It would also probably taste great on a baked potato. Get creative!
Sriracha, Sesame Oil & Lime Juice
I love using this combination in my mash-ups. The other day I had a quinoa & edamame mash-up and this was the perfect compliment. I often find myself make quinoa or brown rice dishes with the intention of putting sriracha on them.
If you’re a fan, you know what I’m talking about. If you’re not, go get a bottle. You won’t regret it.
