I know, I know…seriously? Yes, seriously. This roll has so much going for it though, that if you just try it, I promise you won’t be disappointed.
Yesterday at happy hour, we started talking about food (go figure) and one of my friends asked me to name one of the best uniquely vegan things I’ve tried. I had to think for a second, but then it became obvious: macro vegan sushi.
Usually my policy with vegan replacement or substitution foods is to accept it as a new food altogether. I’m not going to kid myself (nor do I want to) by biting into veggie burger expecting it to taste like meat. It would be setting myself up for disappointment, and there’s no reason for it considering how much delicious vegan food there is out there.
These rolls were an interesting surprise though. No, they didn’t taste like fish, but the taste and texture did remind me of other specialty sushi rolls – the ones where there’s more going on than just the fish and rice. They are delicious anyway, so that also helps!
So, what’s the ‘fish’? It’s actually a tofu based roll with rice, nori and other vegetables. It’s not served dry like standard sushi though, instead the roll is marinated in a sauce containing oil, vinegar and agave.
The pieces are rather large – like the oversized rolls that awkwardly take two bites to finish. I guess it’s fitting, because this technically is a specialty roll…
The Macro Vegetarian brand sells lots of good food, I’ve tried some of their other dishes such as tofu sides and seaweed salad and I’m always happy. They’re also reasonably priced so it’s a win-win.
Have a great weekend!
