I’ve realized something about myself: if I like a certain food, I will eat it everyday until I’m sick of it. And so my breakfast version of Groundhog Day has taken over lately, with the same green smoothie every morning. I know the day will come when I’m just over it, and with no explanation ditch it for a plate of GF pancakes – but until then, I’m just enjoying the benefits of this current breakfast addiction.
I always start with unsweetened almond milk and sometimes if I have it, add a little light coconut milk. I find that the coconut milk helps to thicken the smoothie up. In general, I always go for the unsweetened nut milks because the added sugar in the sweetened ones is just totally unnecessary. Trust me, you won’t miss it when it’s gone.
For protein, I add brown rice protein powder. I’ve tried both soy and hemp proteins before, but didn’t really like the taste of hemp and found too much soy can actually be a bad thing. I’ve been drinking these everyday remember. I’ve been using Jarrow Formula brown rice protein powder, but just received Sun Warrior brand in the mail. I keep reading reviews from people who absolutely love it, so naturally I had to have it. I’ll admit it’s definitely better than Jarrow, but it’s greatness comes at a price – it’s roughly twice as much as Jarrow! Maybe it’s because of the few extra grams of protein you get with each serving, but I don’t know if I can justify it in the long run. I told myself I could try it for ‘research’ purposes – might just have to enjoy it while it lasts. Tear.
Next comes a frozen banana. I find that bananas, more so than other frozen fruits, help thicken the smoothie too.
The key ingredient however is the kale. It contains tons of vitamins and antioxidants, and when added to a smoothie you barely even know it’s there (aside from the color of course…) I don’t mind a green smoothie, but I know some people won’t even try them. Try to keep in mind that just because it’s green doesn’t mean it has to taste like grass or dirt or whatever else you might think of as ‘too healthy to taste good’. Nonsense. The truth is, it can taste like almost anything you want depending what else you add.
Since I have a massive sweet tooth (and if you know me, you know this in itself is actually a huge understatement), I add vanilla creme liquid stevia and some ground cinnamon. The result? It tastes just like a cupcake! I’m pretty much in favor of anything that tastes like dessert, especially for breakfast. Aside from the color, you’d really have no idea there was all that kale in there! Considering this particular food calls to my sweet tooth like few others can (of significant nutritional value, that is), this food run, or rut, may last longer than others.
Okay, so I know the photo is pretty amateur, but that’s a gorgeous green smoothie. I’ll have to work on the photo skills.
